The agenda of this workshop consists of theory and practice. After opening, the program continued with the giving of theories about amateur radio satellites. In addition to the IO satellite, there are also other amateur radio satellites that can be used such as AO-7 as the longest-running amateur radio satellite, AO, AO and QO which is a geostationary amateur radio satellite. After the theoretical material was finished aroundthe program continued with the practice material for making QFH antennas.

Meanwhile, the equipment for making antennas was carried by each participant, such as solder, scissors, pliers, drill, and others.

How To Build A QFH (Quadrifilar Helix Antenna) to Download Images From Weather Satellites

The atmosphere became even more exciting, because in making this QFH antenna there were separate challenges, especially in the RG cable connection to the antenna element. But because the antenna is quite complicated, there is no antenna that can be tried on the Voice Repeater schedule. The results are quite satisfying. Post to Cancel.

Eggbeater or QHA?

Wall putty formula pdf

Eggbeater antennas are very popular for amateur satellite use, and have the additional advantage of being able to switch between right-hand and left-hand circular polarization RHCP and LHCP.

But having used QHAs for various uses such as GPS reception and telemetry transmission from an amateur rocket, I was already familiar with them and their radiation patterns and polarization characteristics. Also, the QHA's polarization remains circular down to the horizon, whereas the Eggbeater becomes horizontally polarized—not so hot for the vertically polarized terrestrial repeaters! Also, QHAs look totally cool. A diplexer is of course needed to connect both to the single antenna connector of a dualband radio, but these are relatively cheap and I suppose quite easy to make as well.

With the QHA, I had to choose one. I did a lot of simulations on this, and finally decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

I built them separately, and mounted them on top of each other. Below are some notes on the construction of these antennas, and here I've outlined what I learned from the simulations. Connection points for the helices The QHA is composed of two wire loops, one slightly larger than the other, twisted into helices. The feedpoint is at the top, where the feedline connects to both loops.

One loop is slightly above resonance, the other just below. Thus one loop is slightly inductive, the other one slightly capacitive. This causes a phase difference between the two, leading to circular polarization being radiated. What "ideal" means here is still a mystery.

This tubing was nice and easy to work with, and easily available, which is more important. To connect the feedline, I made small printed circuit board connection plates one per antenna to which I soldered the coax, and attached the helices with screw terminals. The screw terminals came from amp break-off screw terminal blocks.

These are known as "sugar cubes" sokeripala in Finnish, I've seen them referred to as "choco blocks" also. I cut away the plastic insulation, tinned the flat surface of each terminal, fabricated and pre-tinned circuit boards, and soldered everything together.

The sewer pipe body and brake tube elements After drilling the sewer pipe and measuring and marking the brake tubes, I pushed the tube through the sewer pipe and began bending. I made the degree turns with the help of a small length of iron tube of suitable diameter. Then I formed the helices freehand. Helices and supports I stuck the ends of the helix into the holes drilled in the sewer pipe to temporarily hold them in place. I then continued to work on the helices until they looked somewhat alright.

They go through the sewer pipe, and are kept in place by split pins. Grooves are made in their ends for the tubing, which is attached with an arrangement of split pins and cable ties. Coax feedline Before attaching the feedpoint, I threaded the coax feedline through holes in the sewer pipe, and wrapped it around the pipe five times.

This will become the choke balun for the unbalanced feedline.Due to the hemispherical shape of beam-width this antenna is also known as hemispherical antenna. The polish coating on radome makes the fiberglass surface smoother. The smooth surface does not allow bulk ice formation and it can sever very windy weather conditions. Our Fiber glass Circular Polarized Quadrifilar Helix Antennas are light in weight and easy to install on antenna mast or pole. Fiberglass Circular Polarized Quadrifilar Helix Antenna provide excellent solution for analogue and digital satellite communication systems.

Due to its large beam-width these quadrifilar helix antennas are best for GPS navigation communication system. Quadrifilar Helix Antenna large beam-width helps in detecting a very small strength signal present near its range without any alignment. Fiberglass Circular Polarized Quadrifilar Helix Antenna is very easy to install even a single person can mount them on a high-height antenna tower or mast. Circular Polarized Quadrifilar Helix Antenna.Print this Post. Every few hours a NOAA weather satellite passes over your head, continuously transmitting pictures in visible light, infrared, and shortwave infrared.

Meteorologists utilize this information to predict weather. The good news is, so can you. With something like the NooElec SDR dongle, a computer, and a QHF antenna you can predict your own weather, even if all other forms of communication are not functioning. Why do I need to build such a complex looking piece of machinery?

qfh antenna

No, seriously, it has to do with simple physics and the nature of radio. Here is a simple explanation- Antennas perform best when they are properly polarized, or the antennas are pointed in the same direction in three dimensional space. If you were to take two walkie talkies and point one antenna straight up and one sideways at a 90 degree angle you would notice that the reception would be severely degraded or nonexistent, even if in the same room.

When you have a satellite orbiting the earth, even if the antenna is pointed straight down, its polarization to you on earth will change as it goes from horizon to horizon. The solution is to build an antenna that is properly polarized in all directions, hence the QFH antenna.

What do I need to build the QHF antenna? There are many ways to build this antenna and many tutorials can be found when scouring the web.

They tell you what is needed for the antenna, but are a little short on how to put it together. The reason I chose this antenna was its rugged design, performance, and when you are done, it looks like a work of art. To build this antenna you will need to be mechanically inclined and willing to dedicate a weekend to the project. Most of the materials can be purchased from any home improvement store, but here is the shopping list.

These were hard to find in the local HI store, Lowes had them, but you can get them online here. You will be cutting off one end. Remember, I built my antenna using this design and using this tutorial. My intention is to tell you HOW I did it. The very first thing you are going to have to do is prepare the PVC section of pipe.

Post falls

I arbitrarily picked 3 feet for total size. For the top of the antenna you are going to have to drill 4 holes at right angles to one another. This will require you to make two templates, one for the top of the pipe and one for the bottom. Your templates should look something like this.

I took a sheet of paper and cut out a 40mm wide strip. Draw a line down the middle of the paper. This will put your drill points 20mm from the top of the pipe.

This is important because you will need room for the cap, but you DO NOT want to have to wire something way down inside the pipe.Project White Star, those intrepid souls trying to fly a weather balloon across the Atlanticbuilt an excellent helical antenna to be featured as part of their next payload. The one pictured above is not their final antenna, but one of the experimental ones.

After the scrub on the launch pad for flight attempt A, we went back to the books, to try and figure out what we could do to improve our odds the next time around. One of our biggest setbacks was the inability make an antenna suitable for our use: We needed an antenna tuned for MHz, not needing a ground plane, weighing as little as possible. After 4 tries, and some expensive test equipment, the end result was a Quadrifilar Helix antenna weighing only 80 grams!

Tests with both a quarter-wave dipole and a J-pole antenna were lackluster. Documentation from our satellite service provider implied that a quadrifilar helix antenna would provide the best coverage at all.

While these antennas are pretty, their design and construction was voodoo magic at first. Latest John Baichtal. By John Baichtal John Baichtal. Related Stories from Make:.
